The MediaTek Dimensity 9300: What You Need To Know
With notable advancements over the top-tier Dimensity 9200 from 2023, MediaTek’s flagship smartphone chip for 2024 is the Dimensity 9300.
This year will be especially fascinating for MediaTek’s flagship chipset since the new chipset focuses not just on year-over-year advances to CPU and GPU performance but also support for on-device Generative AI capabilities.
Generative AI Support
With the Dimensity 9300, MediaTek is making a major commitment to supporting generative AI. When compared to the Dimensity 9200, the chipset’s redesigned NPU provides a 90% boost for generative AI tasks and a 2x boost for general AI performance, all while consuming 45% less power overall.
In essence, this means that the chipset can generate AI images in less than a second and support LLMs (long language models) with seven billion parameters at a speed of twenty TOPS(tokens per second). However, depending on the particulars of the smartphone in question, it can reach an astounding 33 billion characteristics with a lower TOPS rate.
That’s a lot of numbers, but it really means that phones with Dimensity 9300 will be able to perform Generative AI tasks, such as advanced image editing and text generation in that ChatGPT style, on-device without requiring an internet connection. This will make Gen AI experience faster and more secure than they have been so far.
ALL Big Core Design
With the Dimensity 9300, MediaTek has used an entirely new chipset architecture, aiming for what it refers to as an “All Big Core” chip design with four ultra-large cores and four big cores.
With a 40% increase in CPU power, 15% greater performance at the same power as the Dimensity 9200, and 33% reduced power consumption when matching its predecessor’s peak power, MediaTek claims that this enables substantial year-over-year gains. This leads to a significant increase in battery efficiency as well, saving 10–13% on common workloads like Instagram and TikTok scrolling.
The 12-core ARM Immortalis-G720 GPU is paired with this, and its standout features include a 46% improvement in ray-tracing performance, console-quality global lighting effects in mobile games, and a 46% increase in peak performance over the Dimensity 9200.
Camera
Devices powered by Dimensity 9300 accomplish some amazing things with their cameras thanks to the enhanced improvement and Gen AI support, especially in the area of video capture.
This includes 3-mic HDR audio noise reduction, which according to MediaTek can reduce up to 25 km/h winds by up to 99%, and always-on HDR previews for 4K video capture, which provide you with an accurate preview of the video you’re taking.
Additionally, video can be segmented using 16-object layers, which automatically recognizes and applies various upgrades to different objects such as faces, buildings, and skylines.
Display
Along with supporting 4K@120Hz for incredibly high-res, buttery smooth smartphone displays and new support for WQHD resolution at up to 180Hz, up from 120Hz for a 25% boost, the Dimensity 9300 can also power new high-end display technology that will enhance the viewing experience on flagship-level smartphones in 2024.
For an even better HDR viewing experience, it also supports Google’s new Ultra HDR display format, which was unveiled with Android 14. Additionally, there’s an improvement in foldable compatibility because of the chipset’s dual active display support, which enables simultaneous usage of the internal and cover screens.
Similar to the camera upgrades, this doesn’t guarantee that every Dimensity 9300 device will have a 4K@120Hz display that can play Ultra HDR content, but it does hint at the possibility of really cool smartphone screens by 2024.
